In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Rene Richard began a period of his most iconic oil production. This is the beginning of large-format works presenting camp scenes where dogs and trappers prepared themselves for long expeditions. In the work Trappeur with his dogs, North West, the three animals hitched in the foreground are ready for departure. The position of their bodies and their spiked fur reflect the harsh climate of northwestern Canada. To the right of the painting, the presence of a sled with the necessary for the trip suggests the imminence of the departure.

Represented in a northern landscape, the trapper is positioned from behind and bent towards the campfire preparing the final meal before the expedition. Trees with needle-like branches stand in the snowy landscape near the icy spring. Here, nature and the character seem to melt with each other under Richard’s feverish brushstroke.
In the work Trappeur with his dogs, North-West, the action of the scene and the activity of the character retains just as much attention of the density of the forest. Through this work as well as with the series of Grandes scènes du Nord, René Richard attempts to report on the daily lives of travelers and trappers in Canada’s North.
