Trapper and frequent traveler, the painter René Richard traveled north and west of Alberta in search of the best furs for many years. In the 1960s, Richard had a deep nostalgia for his old nomadic way of life. From then on, he began a production of works that evoked his memories of the Great North. In the work The Trappers in Northwestern Alberta, the artist visually translates the atmosphere of the hostile regions in which he lived with his associates with his brushstroke.

The canoe, a means of transport favored by the former trapper, is highlighted in this work, which is reminiscent of the importance of this one in the daily life of the wood runners. The treatment of trees with acicular branches and the steepness of the mountain in the background reflect Richard's willingness and ability to portray Canadian territory without idealization. In short, a territory with demanding constraints, but imbued with a majestic force.
