From 1912 to 1940, René Richard traveled though north and west region of Canada. In 1940, he settled permanently in Baie-St-Paul, Charlevoix, and began his artistic career. In the spring of 1941, the former trapper built himself a boat which he named Le Solitaire. With the latter, he made many river tours on the St. Lawrence where he discovered new places : Port-au-Persil, Saint-Siméon and Tadoussac. These tours lasted until 1953 and thereafter, the aging artist continues to work on the motive, but this time, the "runs" (expeditions) of painting are done in the company of volunteers.

In this composition entitled Côte de sable (Tadoussac), Richard insists on the treatment of the sandy wall of this site along the river. The touch, here large and thick, reflects the spontaneity and liveliness that characterizes Richard's works.
