René Richard draws his inspiration for this Ungava scene from his two major expeditions of 1948 and 1951 in northern Quebec. This composition brings together various sensory and empirical elements, such as the immensity of the landscapes, the cold and the solitude, which marked the painter's northern experience. During the 1950s, Richard's artistic recognition grew, supported by numerous exhibitions and by his series of works dedicated to northern landscapes.
