Throughout his painting career, René Richard masterfully captured the daily life of Canadian northern trappers. His works reflect both the solitude and the harsh climatic conditions. Additionally, through his use of light and composition, he demonstrated a deep attachment to this way of life, which he lived with passion.

René Richard was well acquainted with the nomadic lifestyle of trappers in remote and inhospitable regions. His experience as a coureur des bois made him the only Canadian artist to have truly experienced the harsh realities of this existence.

For nearly 25 years, René Richard travelled across northern Canada in search of the finest furs. This nomadic lifestyle forced him to constantly move and set up temporary camps. The dark blue sky in his works evokes the cold of the northern landscapes.
