Work of Paul-Vanier Beaulieu created in 1941, during his years of internment at the prison of St-Denis in France. Paul-Vanier Beaulieu and the painter Jean Dallaire were brought to this prison by the German occupation during the Second World War. Several Canadians and British subjects stay at this place described by Beaulieu as "free inside the barbed wire". The works of this era bear witness to those darker years of the artist's career.
