Despite the advice of his entourage who insisted that he continue his artistic career in France, Maurice Cullen decided in 1895 to continue his journey in Canada. This decision was difficult to assume for the artist who could not know the immediate success. His desire to have Impressionist art appreciated by Canadians was a mission for him. Although the criticism was very laudatory, it did not translate into real sales.

After a few financially difficult years, Cullen won the bronze medal in 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Following this encouraging victory, Maurice Cullen and his friend painter William Brymner, opened a workshop in St-Eustache north of Montreal.

The painting Near St-Eustache was created in 1910. The same year, the artist married Barbara Pilot, mother of future artist Robert Pilot. This period marks a renewal in the artist's career, the beginning of an artistic mentorship that he will provide to a younger generation of artists such as A.Y. Jackson, Kathleen Morrice and, of course, Robert Pilot.
