Marcel Barbeau was a Canadian painter and member of the Automatist movement, a group of artists who sought to break away from traditional forms of representation and embrace the unconscious mind as a source of inspiration. Born in Montreal in 1925, Barbeau was a self-taught artist who began painting in the 1940s. He was influenced by the work of the Surrealists and was one of the key figures in the development of the Automatist movement in Quebec. Barbeau’s works are characterized by their vibrant colors and dynamic forms.
