Marcel Barbeau, along with other artists such as Jean-Paul Riopelle, Paul-Émile Borduas, Françoise Sullivan, and Marcelle Ferron, signed the Refus Global manifesto in 1948. Marcel Barbeau's artistic production went through various phases. Initially, he experimented with automatism, and then gradually shifted towards the all-over style, which he embraced in the late 1950s. In the years 1959 and 1960, his paintings were particularly striking, characterized by the predominant use of black and white. By breaking free from the constraints of the all-over frame, he created a duality between the background and the forms in his compositions.
