The views of Hochelaga was one of the favorite subject for Marc-Aurèle Fortin at the turn of the 1930s. The artist liked to roam the streets of Montreal, inspired by the industrialization which transformed the city. The Hochelaga sector quickly became his favorite area. A good number of works in watercolor are realized.
With as much attention as for his rural landscapes produced in the early 1920s, Fortin applied himself to paint the industrial district with vivid colors and the ardor which was his own.
Usually, the works were painted from a vacant lot in a promontory near the Hochelaga railway tracks where Fortin liked to settle. This view allowed him to see as far as Longueuil. This time, the view of Hot Day in Hochelaga, on the contrary, comes from the south shore. Fortin exploited this angle of the city also in the works of view of the Ile Sainte-Hélène in the same years.
From one point of view as the other, Fortin always brings together in his Hochelaga compositions the industrial elements and urban activity around the central point which is the Church of the Nativity.
