This work of the Port of Montreal seen from Île Sainte-Hélène is a work dating from the end of the 1910s. Art historian Sarah Mainguy in the book Marc-Aurèle Fortin, The Experience of Color , describes well the works of this time when the modern character of the city in the landscape of Fortin is made striking. In this regard, Ms. Mainguy says:

"It is rather in the paintings that he produced on the island of Sainte-Hélène at the end of the 1910s that it asserts itself more and that we really feel his pictorial interest for industrial and commercial architecture. to reemerge." Speaking of a very similar work, illustrated in the book, she adds: "we can clearly see the silhouettes of the freighters, trains, grain silos, marine towers and other industrial structures that make up the new face of the port of Montreal. "

[...] "However, the space that these infrastructures occupy in the composition remain relatively limited all the same. It keeps the port at a certain distance, partially hides it with smoke, schematizes its components and, finally, It frames it partly by the vegetation of the island of Sainte-Hélène. In the countless urban scenes that Fortin will paint subsequently, he will often use some of these compositional processes which help to aestheticize the city.
