In 1954, Bellefleur left the province of Quebec to settle in France. During his stay, he met André Breton and the surrealists. These meetings have a great influence on the works he produced in subsequent years. He is then interested in the unconscious and the liberation of the gesture in his practice. He now uses practically only the spatula in his compositions. The works of the early 1960s are characterized by the harmony between the material, the structure and the freedom that guides the gesture. From the artist’s personal collection, Corrida is a perfect example of this pivotal period.

In 1960, the artist not only reached his artistic maturity by exploring several techniques, but he was also selected to represent Canada at the Guggenheim International Contest presented in New York.
