Lyman's drawings accurately document the preparatory work for certain oil works. Lyman was trained in Paris and some see similarities in his work with Cézanne and Matisse. The designs are daring, in shapes and outlines. As much in works on paper as in oils, Lyman approaches the subject of bathers as seen by French painting between the wars, glorifying hedonism and idleness without complex.
