During the 1970s, Jean-Paul Riopelle returned to Quebec after a long absence in Europe. He set up a new workshop in Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson in the Laurentians and took part in numerous hunting and fishing excursions in the northern territories of Quebec. On his return from these expeditions to northern Quebec, the painter created a series of oils with new energy. The geography, fauna and flora of the almost virgin territory inspire the artist who creates a series of works of varying dimensions. He uses the knife to apply the oil in a thick, stirred, even bristly way.

A multitude of works are titled New Impressions and produced during 1977.
