Jean-Paul Riopelle was a renowned painter and Companion of the Order of Canada. Born in Montreal, Quebec in 1923, he was among the first Canadian artists to achieve international recognition. Along with Paul-Émile Borduas, he was one of the first signatories of REFUS GLOBAL. Riopelle represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1962 and was the subject of a major retrospective at the National Center for Art and Culture Georges-Pompidou in Paris in 1981. His works are found in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.
