Yseult Riopelle, “Jean Paul Riopelle: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume 4, 1966-1971”, Montreal, 2014, reproduced page 226, catalogue no. 1970.015H.1970
The year 1970 marked a turning point in the works of painter Jean-Paul Riopelle. Having spent the last years in France, the artist returns more and more frequently to Quebec. Moreover, these returns are enhanced by hunting trips with his friend Champlain Charest. This activity brings him to meet the vast northern territories of his native country and will thus have a strong influence on his future creations. The 1970s were also marked by his sculpted works, the String Game series, The King of the Thule and finally Iceberg.
The work, above, is thus created at the very beginning of its reunion with Quebec lands. The Untitled painting is one of a series of small formats that the painter produced and characterized by shades of red with accents of black and blue. The vertical lines and sometimes in small waves are frequent and characteristic of the time.
