It is from the year 1964 that Jean-Paul Riopelle begins mixed media. The production of the artist that year is impressive and is characterized by works of very large formats. He perpetuates in these paper works the grandiosity of those in oil and named "figures" presented a year earlier, in Paris, during the exhibition Riopelle beyond 120.
The 1965 exhibition by Pierre Matisse in New York, with the exception of the work La Bolduc, oil painting (Place des Arts collection) and The Tree, 26 works in mixed media of very large formats. In these works presented, it is possible to detect the pictorial clues that will lead Riopelle to the subsequent key periods of his career as the Iceberg production a decade later.
