The works of the late period are created from 1970 until the end of the 1980s. The painter then returns to physical descriptions, by the face only, this time. The painter no longer paints the bodies, he concentrates on the frontal representation of the figures and the geographical location by the horizon line. The communication of the subject goes through the expression of the face, the details of the eyes, the nose and the mouth.
These portraits generally show no superfluous detail. However, he adds in this painting a pearl necklace on the subject. This frequent motif with Lemieux refers to the popular theme in Western painting. In fact, the necklace is a symbol of feminine vanity. Guy Robert explains that for Lemieux, the presence of the necklace goes beyond a statement about vanity. He would write “in Lemieux's painting, woman's vanity is no longer a simple question of make-up or showy jewelry. It becomes a refusal to submit to the ravages of time, an exorcism of the aging process and even the proclamation of a quality of being - a singular way of announcing one's person, beautifully and almost poetically".
