In dialogue with the Parisian and New York avant-garde, his audacious paintings opened the doors to him of a solo exhibition at the Martha Jackson gallery in 1963. The same year, McEwen was invited to represent Canada at the VII Biennale of São Paolo. His work attracted the attention of Alfred H. Barr Jr., of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Joseph Hirshhorn, who acquired works for their respective institutions.
