In 1963, Jean McEwen's artistic approach underwent a significant transformation. He shifted from using the axial and vertical line of the endless column series to the cruciform shape. The bright yellow or red colour palette also gave way to brown and burnt orange shades. This development led the artist to create a renowned series of paintings called The Unknown Flag. Constance Naubert-Riser commented on the works of 1963, stating that they were characterized by a gradual shift from a dominant vertical structure to a cruciform structure, along with the use of darker colours.
