Another astonishment can await us when we arrive in Venice after crossing the Grand Canal by gondola and by emerging, at the end of an afternoon, in front of all of Saint Mark, the Piazzetta and the Ducal Palace, the colour of flesh takes on the last light of sunset. ”- Henri Le Sidaner1
Like many other artists of his time, Henri Le Sidaner was captivated by the beauty of Venice. His desire to transpose the atmosphere, light and colour is thus successful in this work. The sparkling water created by the soft touches of colour gives the work a soothing and serene atmosphere. "The art of the painter consists in appeasing and even putting the spectator's gaze to sleep while charming and seducing it" -
- (Emile Verhaeren, Mercure de France ', 1906, in ibid, p. 31).
