The artist Fernand Toupin was one of the signatories of the Plastician Manifesto written by Rodolphe de Repentigny (Jauran) in 1956. Visual artists are painters united by their similar approach to painting and by their social environment.
The plastic artists have concentrated their work, as their name suggests, on the plastic aspects, more precisely on the relations of the elements as the tones the textures, the colors and the forms have between them.
In the 1980s, Fernand Toupin abandoned geometric abstraction in favour of material compositions produced using a mixture of coloured pigments and marble dust (among others).
The artist also draws his inspiration from his direct environment: the Quebec landscape and its topography. Toupin confit: “Texture is very important to me. … ] I like to feel the bubbling of things happening. The rising of the wave. The freshness of the snow. The Ubiquity of Minerals”.
