During the second half of the 1850s, until the early 1860s, Cornelius Krieghoff created compositions whose formal aspect of the landscape was carefully executed. These scenes, like On the Road to Lake St. Charles, Quebec, 1862, are distinguished by the richness of their color as well as the grandiose and lush nature. The characters, represented on a reduced scale, take place in an environment where "[...] our gaze is constantly solicited by the complex order of the surrounding landscape," Dennis Reid1 reminded us.

In 1859, the nomadic temperament of the artist encouraged him to explore Quebec. Recognized for its abundant fishing, Lake Saint-Charles is a destination of choice for fishing and hunting enthusiasts. Since the end of the 17th century, Huron communities from the village of Lorette have been going there to practice trapping, among other activities. Nicknamed Tiora Datuec or "the shining lake" by these communities, Lac Saint-Charles also attracts artists. To this end, the art historian Louise Vigneault points out that Krieghoff had as a guide the Huron-Wendat painter Zacharie Vincent during his numerous fishing trips in this region2.

During his expeditions, Krieghoff favors work on the motif, thus crystallizing the changing landscape according to the seasons. In the work On the Road to Lake St. Charles, Quebec, the warm colors and the careful attention to the texture of the trees that compose the scene testify the painter's interest in the Canadian climate. In the same year, 1862, two of Krieghoff's works were shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia.
