La chasse au Caribou

Winter scenes depicting the daily life of inhabitants are among the most prized works by Krieghoff's clientele, notably the merchants and soldiers of Montreal and Quebec City. The effects of the snow, with flakes dusted on the surface, demonstrate Krieghoff's deep understanding of the winter conditions in Lower Canada. As in his best paintings, the narrative element, here the caribou hunt, plays a central role. Knowing that many of his works were destined for Europe, Krieghoff offered a unique and exotic story to this clientele.

From 1853, Cornelius Krieghoff settled in Quebec City and began an intensive artistic production that spanned eleven years. During these years, he embarked on several journeys across the province to observe the landscapes and learn more about the inhabitants and their customs. Through his representations of hunters, Krieghoff sought to visually convey the characters' commitment, the distinctiveness of their clothing, and the Canadian climatic conditions.
