Very early in his career, Clarence Gagnon is interested in the traditional craftsmanship and traditional know-how in Baie-Saint-Paul. Often dissatisfied with the quality of the material available on the market, he grinds himself pigments bought at Mortin and Tanet in Paris to obtain the desired nuances. This distinctive process allows him to produce compositions with very dynamic and luminous colors.

For the work Le bas Saint-Laurent, Gagnon presents a luminous winter landscape where boats calmly leave the bay to reach the open sea. As they cross the bay dotted with snow and ice accumulation, a warm light invades the rock face of the scene. Here, Gagnon presents an ephemeral moment of the day, most likely captured on the pattern during one of his many hikes. During the winter, the artist frequently went cross-country skiing. This means of transportation allowed him to move more easily in the inaccessible areas of Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent.
