The Northwest Territories were Jackson's favorite destination during the 1950s. Accompanied by Maurice Haycock, geologist and friend of the painter since 1920, Jackson painted in difficult climatic conditions.
Jackson writes: “I always wanted to visit Barren Lands ... It was an exciting country: with its mosses, lichens and small plants turning red and orange, it looked like a rich tapestry, hence large boulders. were strewn everywhere. ”
