Sailing of an Empress
"Adrien Hébert exhibited in April 1932 a lithograph entitled Harbor Scene, Montreal at the Art Gallery of Toronto. It is most certainly the work known now under the title of Sailing of an Empress. [..] If the subject of this last lithograph was also the subject of a painting, the composition of Sailing of an Empress is found in a large charcoal drawing. " - Pierre L'Allier, Adrien Hébert, Musée du Québec, p. 152. ( translated from the original french version)
The Cosner gallery therefore presents the large charcoal drawing titled Sailing of an Empress which Mr. L'Allier mentions in his book published in 1993.
Canadian painter, son of the famous sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. In painting Montreal's urbanity and industrialization between the wars, he quickly became a figure of modernity in Canadian art. Oil paintings on the subject of the Port of Montreal are featured in the collections of major museums across the country. This charcoal on paper, depicting a passenger ship surrounded by trailers in rough waters, is hardly a sketch. Here we have an accomplished work with sure and frank gestures specific to the artist
