Franklin Carmichael

Franklin Carmichael was a 20th-century Canadian artist born on May 4, 1890 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. He is best known as a member of the famous Group of Seven, a collective of Canadian painters who redefined Canadian art in the early 20th century.

Carmichael showed an early interest in art and began studying at the Toronto School of Fine Arts (now the University of Ontario) in 1911. He continued his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, Germany, from 1913 to 1914. However, his stay was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, which forced him to return to Canada.

Back in Toronto, Carmichael met other artists passionate about creating distinctive Canadian art. In 1920 they formed the Group of Seven, which included artists such as A.Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, Franz Johnston, and later A.J. Casson. Together, they sought to capture the beauty and grandeur of Canadian landscapes in their paintings.

Carmichael’s works were characterized by bold and bold colours, skilful use of light and simplified forms. He was particularly drawn to the landscapes of Northern Ontario, where he found abundant inspiration in the lakes, forests and changing skies. His paintings expressed a deep connection to Canadian nature and the simplicity of rural life.

In addition to her work with the Group of Seven, Carmichael was also a founding member of the Ontario Society of Painters in Watercolour. He taught art at the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario University of Art and Design) and influenced many emerging artists.

Over the years, Carmichael has participated in numerous exhibitions and received praise for her work. His talent and commitment to Canadian art have helped define a distinct artistic identity for Canada.

Franklin Carmichael died on October 24, 1945, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy. His paintings continue to be admired for their moving depictions of Canadian landscapes and for the way they capture the essence of Canada’s natural beauty.
