Edwin Holgate

Edwin Holgate was born in Ontario in 1892 and died in 1977 in Montreal. Edwin Holgate spent his early childhood in Jamaica, but returned to Ontario in 1897 for his studies. He enrolled a few years later in 1907 at the Art Association of Montreal, having as teacher William Brmner and Maurice Cullen.
Between 1912 and 1915, he traveled to France in Ukraine and Japan. C, was in 1922, and exhibited for the first time at the Clud des Arts in Montreal.
From 1928 to 1934 Edwin Holgate was a professor of engraving at the Montreal School of Fine Arts. During the same years he became a member of the Group of Seven. In 1935, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1976, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presented a retrospective of his work.
