Berthe Des Clayes

Berthe Des Clayes was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1877. She studied in England at Busher School of Art before proceeding to the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1912, she moved to Canada with her sister Gertrude. Their younger sister Alice, also an artist, will join them few years later.

Upon arrival, Berthe Des Clayes based in Montreal and set up her studio in the Beaver Hall Square, popular district of artists in this time. After World War I, the artist traveled between France, England and Canada.

Canadian landscape artist, Berthe Des Clayes painted mainly in oil but also excels with watercolor and pastel. She participated at the Spring Exhibitions of the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and  at the Royal Canadian Academy. She's twice winners of the Jessie Dow Prize.

She died in 1968 in Devon, England.
