André Bieler was born in Lausanne in Switzerland in 1896 and died in Kingston in 1989. Bieler and his family settled in France in 1898. Young boy of 14 years, André Bieler moved to Canada. He joined the Canadian army in 1915 and returned to Canada after the First World War. Adopted the painting in 1920 and exhibited for the first time in 1924. Inspired by the nature of the Quebec landscape, André Bieler chose l'ile d'Orléans for its buccolic nature and its authentic Québec terroir. In 1936, he became a professor at Queen's University. In 1941, he became the first president of the Canadian Federation of Artists.
