Jean-Paul Mousseau
(1927 - 1991)
Quebec painter, Automatist, Refud Global manifesto signatory
Canadian artist Jean-Paul Mousseau took his first steps in painting when he was just thirteen years old at Collège Notre-Dame in Montreal. There, Brother Jérôme guided him in the early stages of his artistic development. After studying cabinetmaking and decoration at the École du Meuble in Montreal, he joined the Automatistes group and signed the manifesto Refus global in 1948, becoming a key member. As a founding member of the Association of Non-figurative Artists of Montreal, Mousseau played a crucial role in integrating art into the urban environment. He is well known for creating significant murals in the Montreal metro, including the circles at Peel station and the Opus 74 mural at Viau station.
Although he had different ideas from the original artistic director, Robert Lapalme, Mousseau managed to impose his influence after taking over the position. Apart from the metro, Mousseau’s artistic impact extended to various projects, such as lighting modules for the Orford Arts Centre, works in the Aéroports de Montréal, and several office towers in the city.
Over the years, his artistic style evolved from non-figurative paintings to decorative works. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad, which helped solidify his reputation as an artist. In 1997, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal organized a retrospective to pay tribute to his artistic heritage. Mousseau’s work continues to enrich the collections of artistic institutions across Canada, reflecting his enduring influence in the art world.
