(1936 - -)
Quebec sculptor, National Order of Quebec, Paul-Emile Borduas Prize
René Derouin, born in Montreal in 1936, is a multidisciplinary artist living in Val-David, in the Laurentians. With an artistic career of more than fifty years, he explores themes of identity and territory from a Pan-American perspective, influenced by his travels and stays abroad. After studying in Mexico in the 1950s, he immersed himself in pre-Columbian cultures and, a few decades later, explored the concept of nordicity during a visit to northern Quebec. His work, represented in engraving, drawing, sculpture and installations, has been widely acclaimed worldwide. He has received honours in Mexico and has exhibited his works in renowned institutions in France, the United States, Venezuela, Australia and Japan. René Derouin has also received numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, the Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec and the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle. His works are part of prestigious collections around the world, and he has published several books detailing his artistic journey and reflections.
