William Goodridge Roberts

Canadian artist, William Goodridge Roberts was born in 1904 in Barbados and died in Montreal in 1974.
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1923 to 1925 and at the Art Student League in New York from 1926 to 1928, he was trained on French modernists and Italian primitives.
In 1930, he moved to Ottawa where he taught art at the Ottawa Art Association. He subsequently created the summer art school at Wakefield in the Gatineau area.
His first solo exhibition took place at the Club des Arts de Montréal in 1932. Four years later, he took part in the opening of the Robert-Newmann School of Art with the painter Ernest Newmann.
In 1938 he was a founding member of the Eastern Group and the Contemporary Art Society the following year.
During the war years, he taught jointly with the Art Association of Montreal with the exception of two years when he was engaged as a war artist in England for the Canadian Army.
In 1953, William Goodridge Roberts received a scholarship for Europe, where he spent a few months.
In 1969, the National Gallery of Canada devoted a retrospective, the first for the museum, which normally retains the honor of the deceased artists.
