Marcel Barbeau

The Canadian painter, Marcel Barbeau was born in Montreal on February 18, 1925. He was introduced to modern art by Paul-Émile Borduas at the École du cabinet. From 1945 to 1953, he attended Borduas' staff workshop and established a studio on St-Hubert Street, which he shared with Riopelle and was often visited by Mousseau. The studio became famous and was known as "the Alley Workshop."

Apart from being a renowned painter and sculptor, Barbeau was interested in printmaking, photography, and performance art. He also created several public works. In 1948, he was one of the signatories of the Refus global. Barbeau's work constantly evolved as he searched for new forms and modes of expression. From 1958 to 1974, he lived and worked outside of Quebec, considering Vancouver, Paris, New York, and Southern California his homes. In 1991, he split his time between Montreal, Pointe-au-Pic, and Paris until he returned to Montreal permanently in 2008. Marcel Barbeau passed away in 2016.
