Fernand Toupin

The quebec painter Fernad Toupin was born in 1930 in Montreal.  At the age of 19, he attended evening classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal.  From 1949 to 1953, he studied painting with Jean-Paul Jérôme and attended the studio of Stanley Cosgrove.  He is a signatory with Jean-Paul Jerome, Louis Belzile and Jauran of the Plastic Artists' Manifestoin 1955. Plasticists are opposed "to the spontaneous and impulsive spot of the automatists, and for a more rigorous pictorial construction focused on the sharpness of the line and the purity of color".
At the same time, he is the Director of exhibitions on the Executive Council of the Non-figurative Artists Association of Montreal.  In 1959, the art of Toupin embarked on a whole new way. Always interested in abstraction, the artist explores the texture with a more abundant material on the canvas, and his pigments are mixed with marble dust.
"I like that we feel the bubbling of the things being done.  The rising of the wave.  The freshness of the snow.  The omnipresence of minerals. "  

At the beginning of 1970, a gallery in Paris offered him a solo exhibition, which proved to be a great success: all the pieces presented find taker.  Following this event, a Montreal merchant took Fernand Toupin under his wing, allowing him for the first time to leave his job at the city of Montreal and to devote himself to painting.  In 1993, he returned to geometrical abstraction again.

His artworks are featured in numerous public and private collections, including: the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, the United States and Europe.
He was appointed to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1977.
