Albert Dumouchel
(1916 - 1971)
Painter, engraver and photographer
Albert Dumouchel was born in 1916 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. Painter, engraver, photographer and teacher, Albert Dumouchel taught art from 1936 to 1949 at the Valleyfield Seminary. From 1940, he became an illustrator on fabrics at Montreal Cottons. He is also professor of drawing, photography and history at the very young School of graphic art of Montreal which will later become the Institute of graphic arts of Montreal. Albert Dumouchel is considered to be the pioneer of printmaking in Quebec by the foundation of his engraving workshop at this same institute.
It is part of the activities of the surrealist artists of Montreal. In 1948, he signed the Prisme d'Yeux manifesto, initiated by Alffred Pellan. He received a UNESCO scholarship in 1955, a member of the Florence Academy of Arts in 1964, and Canada's Centenary Medal in 1967.
He set up his studio in Saint-Antoine sur le Richelieu with his wife, the painter-engraver Monique Charbonneau. He died on January 11, 1971 at the age of 55.
