Henrietta Mabel May
(1877 - 1971)
Canadian painter, Beaver Hall Group
Henrietta Mabel May was born in Montreal in 1877 and died in 1971 in British Columbia. Born into a family of nine children, May showed a talent for drawing very early on. She was one of the first women to be admitted to the Art Association of Montreal in 1902. She will, however, have to set aside her studies for several years in order to meet the needs of her family. In 1912, after completing her studies, she left with Emily Coonan for a trip across Europe. They visit galleries and museums, and May will be particularly sensitive to the Impressionists. Returning to her native land, she continued to paint, but the Great Depression forced May to teach to support herself. She nevertheless continues to exhibit, organizes classes of drawings at the National Gallery. She returned in 1948 to Montreal for two years before moving permanently to British Columbia.
