Joan Mitchell
(1925 - 1992)
american painter
Joan Mitchell was born on February 12, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois in the United States, she will become an essential artist of 20th century American painting. She is often considered one of the major artists of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, an art movement that emerged after World War II in the United States.
She began her artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago with the Edward L, Ryerson scholarship. During her student years, the young painter became passionate about modern French artists such as Van Gogh, Cézanne and Matisse.
At the end of the 1940s, she continued her apprenticeship in New York at the school of Hans Hoffman and it was from this moment that Joan Mitchell was introduced to abstract expressionism. She left the American metropolis for Paris in 1948 and returned there in the fall of 1949.
In the 1950s, well established in New York, she met painters like Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Grasse Hartigan, as well as poets like Franck O'Hara and John Ashbery. Mitchell thus quickly forged a reputation among his American contemporaries. She became an active member of the bubbling art scene of the time. She quickly made a name for herself as an abstract artist, developing a distinctive style characterized by bold colors, energetic gestures, and an expressive use of color and texture.
In 1952, Joan Mitchell divorced her first husband, Barney Rosset, owner of the Grove Press. She will begin a few years later an intimate relationship with the Canadian painter Jean-Paul Riopelle. Mitchell settled permanently in Paris from 1959. With Jean-Paul Riopelle, the couple acquired a property in the village of Vétheuil in France which would have an impact on their respective creations.
Her paintings were often inspired by nature, especially the landscapes of the French countryside. Joan Mitchell's career has been marked by numerous individual and collective exhibitions both in the United States and in Europe. This clearly contributed to its international fame. She offered oil works, pastels and prints.
