Edmund Alleyn, a Canadian painter born in Quebec City in 1931. He began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City alongside Jean-Paul Lemieux and Jean-Philippe Dallaire. He won the Grand Prize in the artistic competition of the Province of Quebec in addition to a scholarship from the Royal Society.
An abstract painter, he is influenced by his pairs Paul-Emile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle. His many years in France, will evolve Edmund Alleyn towards the figuration. It will begin the so-called Indian period, inspired by the First Nations of the west coast.
He returned to Quebec in the 1970s and was surprised how his native land was able to change and the socio-political aspect influenced his creation. He undertakes major exhibitions at the Musée du Québec and at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. In the same years, he became a teacher at the University of Ottawa, where he stayed for fifteen years.
Edmund Alleyn died at the age of 73 in 2004. A major retrospective is devoted to the MAC in 2016.
